Description of Ruoler [rue-oh-ler], the Planet On Which Eldia Rests:

Ruoler has four major land masses, most of which are centered around the north pole and equator. It has an average surface temperature of about 71° Fahrenheit [compared to Earth’s average as of 2013 of 58.3° Fahrenheit]. Its average temperature has been fairly stable over the last several millennia, and it experiences very low levels of geological activity in a few hotspots. Easily-mined metals are found in moderate quantities over most of the land, with some areas being especially rich.

Eldia is the largest landmass on Ruoler that reaches the north pole (known as the Northern Boundary) and stretches down to the equator (known as the Midway), as well as stretching east and west across Ruoler. To its east is the Sepeo [see-pee-oh] Ocean and the country of Druhr [drew-rur]. To the west is the Holilk [hall-ilk] Ocean and the country of Uvris [ooo-vris]. Finally, the country of Iatrea [eee-ah-trea] is located to the southwest of Eldia partway in the Holilk and Bouhm [boo-ooom] Oceans.

Of The Four Continents and Their Peoples

Eldia - “The Tamers’ Realm”

Eldia's economy focuses on manufacturing various items using the resources of the continent and the other continents. Eldia is home to the Dragon Tamers, those that tame dragons and keep them from hurting themselves, other dragons, and humans. Tamers have a dragon with which they share a deep connection with called their Companion, but they also live in large sanctuaries with the dragons they tame and care for. Tamers take in injured dragons, heal and care for them, and release them, or have them continue to live the rest of their lives in the sanctuary. Tamers also hunt down and tame Rogue dragons (dragons that have been thrown into violent frenzies) keeping them, and anything in their paths, from harm.

Tamers used to use violent methods to tame dragons before the War of Fear, but they now use passive methods that cause no harm to dragons. Tamers and Slayers also used to be great allies, but this was when Tamers were more violent. Tamers are typically intense and passionate about their interests and their sanctuaries. To elect a ruler in Eldia, a tournament is held where the Tamer with the highest number of dragons tamed in one hour ascends to the throne. A woman who tamed 20 dragons won the most recent tournament, and thus became queen. This woman was Phano Roesia Mithan, or "The Dragon Queen" as she is commonly called by her subjects.

A benevolent and strong ruler, Phano is good friends with her fellow rulers of Ruoler, even Kiodrus to an extent. She comforted Nuur after his wife’s passing, she often has long conversations with Aurelia about her work, and as far as Phano knows, Kiodrus is still the kind and just ruler he was when he was first made king. She respects him for this reason, unaware of what he is really like nowadays. Phano is currently the undisputed leader of all the rulers of Ruoler, though there are whispers that Kiodrus wants to change that…!

Phano’s Views on Dragons: “Dragons are beautiful and majestic creatures. They may not be human, but they have rights, among them the right to a long and happy existence. They should not be hunted like game, or experimented on like test subjects, or used like objects. They should be respected and treated well and fairly. Even the most dangerous of dragons can be tamed; those that are too afraid to attempt such a task should leave the dragons in question well enough alone and they will not be a bother.”

Druhr - “The Racers’ Haven”

Druhr's economy focuses on mining, as it is huge in Druhr (there are many caves under the desert and plains that make up the continent). Druhr is home to the Dragon Racers, those who train dragons to compete in fast-paced and reckless dragon races. Racers have their own dragon called their Competitor that they have trained for a specific race (Land, Air, Sea, Birace [race with two components], or Trirace [race with all three components]) and a second dragon (an “understudy” of sorts, in case their first is injured). Races are typically called “Runs”, even if no running occurs. Competitors and their Racers wear armor in order to stay safe during a Run, seeing as Runs are extremely brutal [akin to chariot racing in Ancient Greece and Rome, but replace the chariots with dragons]. Parts of the saddles of Competitors are made of an extremely powerful magnet that is attracted to the metal armor on the Racer’s boots that usually go from the knees down. The Racer’s legs stick to the magnet, keeping them from falling off the Competitor during the action of a Run.

Racers live in towns and settlements with stables for their dragons, and they pay the owners of the stables to care for the dragons and for their dragons' lodgings. They often come to Breeders for the “perfect dragon” and pay a decent amount of money for these dragons (seeing as these dragons have been bred for speed or agility or the like). Most Racers take good care of their dragons, but some release their dragons back into the wild or give them away to Tamers or families who want them as pets when the dragon is no longer performing as well as it once did or if it does not perform well at all in the first place.
Racers are commonly referred to as “Adrenaline Junkies” because of their love of the "boost" they get from the extremity of the Runs they participate in. They have no limits, no filters, and are very, VERY hyper.

To elect a ruler, a particularly tough Run called the “Grand Trial” is held. Every time it is held, the type of Run it is changes. The most recent Grand Trial was a Land Run, and the winner was a man named Nuur [new-ur] Denmiss Adelardus III and his Competitor, Upbeat. Nuur is an odd one. Always adventurous and displaying the traits that Racers typically do (as well as being impulsive and a bit of a hot head at times), he is typically well-liked by his subjects and an acquired taste at best for those from Eldia, Uvris, or Iatrea. Often bouncing from one thing to the next and forgetting many things, people think him a bit mad. This idea of him being mad only became more prominent after the untimely death of Nuur’s wife in a Run. Whenever he visits his Competitor in the Royal Stables and sees his queen’s former Competitor, or whenever someone mentions the queen’s name or death, he twitches and mutters nonsense to himself for a few minutes before turning back to his own Competitor or to whatever he was doing and acts as if nothing ever happened. Nuur hopes that his son, Rexium, will be skilled enough to win the Grand Trial and succeed him someday.

Nuur’s Views on Dragons: “Dragons are powerful and fast. Use that to your advantage to best anyone and everyone in your path to success.”

Uvris - “The Slayers’ Domain”

Uvris's economy is focused on “Manufacturing”, but this is a cover story. Most of the nation's wealth (which really translates to "most of Kiodrus's wealth", since he steals from the people) comes from trading dragon parts (scales, teeth/claws, spikes, horns, wings, skeletons/certain bones, even entire taxidermied dragons) via an underground black market. Uvris is home to the Dragon Slayers, those who believe that all dragons are out to harm humanity. Slayers wish to rid the world of Ruoler of dragons once and for all. They kill dragons to protect the human race, for specific body parts (scales, spikes, bones, etc.) for the black market, even for the sport of it at times. Slayers don’t have towns or cities in which they live, exactly. They are nomads, constantly on the move. A Slayer lifestyle can be quite grueling as they search high and low (sometimes in vain) for dragons to kill.

Slayers started the War of Fear, which lasted for many long years. They started it over the fact that they saw all dragons as evil beasts that were banes of humanity, whereas everyone else saw them as companions and friends, for "even the most terrifying could be tamed". With all others against them (and with the might of the enemies' Companions and Competitors, which the Slayers lacked), they were horrendously outnumbered, and there were many casualties on both sides. The treaty that ended the war stated that Slayers could not commit genocides towards dragons. If they were to kill, then they must only do it for their own safety or the safety of others; injuring the Rogue dragon or knocking the dragon unconscious would be preferred over killing it. The kills should be humane - no use of poison or torture, nor prolonged “slow and painful” deaths. The dragon’s death should be as quick and painless as possible, though of course, killing should be the LAST resort. Slayers ignore most if not all of these terms, though there are some that do genuinely follow them (these Slayers are few).

To the current age, Slayers are angered that they lost the war. In schools for slayers, the textbooks say that the other peoples cheated (this is evidence that Slayers cannot accept their defeat of long ago). Slayers are described as aggressive, powerful, and proud, and they are not intimidated by much, if anything at all. To “elect” a leader, a tournament is held where the Slayer with the highest dragon kill count becomes the ruler. Because of the treaty, the men who are put into power stay in power until their deaths, creating dictatorships of sorts, if you will. Kiodrus Centauri Ruzardre [Key-oh-drus Roo-zahr-dray] had an in-tournament kill count of 13, but he didn’t have the highest score. Someone else had a kill count of 14, but they fell ill and died. The rulership was passed on to Kiodrus, and thanks to the treaty, he has stayed the ruler for many years.

Kiodrus started off as a compassionate ruler. He helped his subjects, and drove them into an era of prosperity. That all changed once he realized that he had complete control indefinitely. His nice and kind demeanor faded away in almost an instant, replacing itself with a cruel, more-than-iron fist ruler. The second anyone even THINKS of breaking one of the many, MANY ridiculously specific and unnecessary laws established by him, they are stripped of any weaponry and armor and fed to the dragons (usually Rattling Ribcages) while the other inhabitants watch. He calls these punishment rituals “Dragon Cage Methods.” Of course, after a certain amount of kills, the dragons are slain and replaced with new dragons, though these dragons are not treated well at the slightest. One example of the aforementioned laws is as follows: “Thou shalt not be caught outside the ruler’s palace at exactly 4:26 PM or AM.” The reasons for this law being established are still unknown, but a rumor has floated around that Kiodrus was immensely drunk when he made this law, and he never bothered to remove it. One unnamed man, a Dragon Tamer from far away, attempted to dethrone Kiodrus. His petrified head still hangs from the wall above his unnecessarily ornately decorated throne. Needless to say, he failed in overthrowing Kiodrus.

Kiodrus' Views on Dragons: "Dragons are nothing but mere tools, and the second they aren't useful, they are to be killed, no questions. Not to mention the fact that they are a threat to the further existence of humanity."

Iatrea - “The Breeders’ Paradise”

Iatrea's economy focuses on the many forests in Iatrea and the wide variety of seafood in the coast of Plissea. Because of these forests, lumber is the main export. The seafood in the coast of Plissea also happen to be overwhelmingly popular among all the nations.

Iatrea is home to the Dragon Breeders, those who breed dragons for Racers/richer individuals that want pedigree dragons/dragons with specific characteristics. As a result, Breeders are often very rich. They also study dragons to learn more about the many different species that roam Ruoler. Breeders live similarly to Racers, though they do not have their own dragon. Breeders are often described as being kind, VERY scientific, or both. They are very interested in the study of DNA and have so far successfully mapped about 78% of the dragon genome. As technological advances are increasing, so is the speed of new discoveries. The idea that Breeders are selfish and exploit dragons for their own research purposes is a gross misconception. Breeders care deeply for the dragons they test and do all they can during their experiments to make sure the dragons are not hurt. When an experiment fails, Breeders work hard to find the cause and if a dragon is injured or dies as a result of a failed experiment, Breeders, together with the Iatrean Amity Foundation, hold a burial and memorial for the mourning of the dragon. This compassion for dragons makes the Breeder’s philosophy not all that different from the philosophy of the Dragon Queen, except for the fact that the study of dragons is employed as another means to benefit mankind.

The throne in Iatrea is passed down by heredity to the eldest child in the royal family once they turn 18. The current ruler of Iatrea is Aurelia Ilona Beaumanoir, who is now 22 and the youngest of the 4 rulers in Ruoler.
When she was younger, Aurelia suffered from child abuse and was punished every time her brother did something wrong, a fact that no one but those in her family knows. Because of this abuse, Aurelia is strict, serious, and absolute no-nonsense. Extremely smart, she is often quick to judge others within moments of meeting them (first impressions are EVERYTHING). She puts up walls, blocking out those that try to get close to her, but really, she’s a lonely girl deep down. When her parents passed away, she was glad because of what they did to her. Her father was an adulterer, which is why she has at least a dozen half-siblings hidden in the civilian population. Her mother knew about this, but didn’t do anything, for fear of being kicked out of the palace and losing her luxurious life as the queen.
Aurelia has a younger brother, Alistair Di Beaumanoir, who is in love with her cousin, Kaede Elizaveta Aethelu, a Breeder who has recently traveled to Eldia to study new dragons. Aurelia is actually closer to her cousin than she is to her brother. You could say they’re almost best friends.
Aurelia doesn’t want anyone to suffer as she did (or to suffer at all), which is why she rules kindly, even though she may not often show this side of herself. There is an entire host of suitors and princes from the other continents and even her own who wish to marry her, but she brushes them off, calling them “shameful gold-diggers”. Aurelia knows that she will eventually have to birth an heir, although she does not desire to do so anytime soon. Will there ever be someone who can be the light that breaks her darkness?

Aurelia’s Views on Dragons: “The dragon genome’s complexity is akin to that of humans times a million. Dragons should be thoroughly experimented on and tested; after all, such experiments may bring insight into diseases and genetic disorders that plague man.”
